The Symbols

The symbols found on the Gypsy Road deck have been passed down from one generation to the next as far back as records can find. They have been included as ornamental patterns on pottery, metalwork, embroidery, quilting, egg decorating and many other hand crafted items.

In the time before the Judeo-Christian religion arrived in the region of the Carpathian mountains, people believed each symbol imbued the object with magical powers. The symbols could ward off evil spirits, bring good luck, ensure fertility and guarantee health. Each symbol represented a thought and carried its own special meaning.

Those meanings remain nearly unchanged even today. Below are a few examples of symbols found within the Gypsy Road, alongside art discovered on cave walls throughout the world.

The symbols used in the Gypsy Road consist of three main design types- geometric shapes, items adapted from the natural world and representations of the work of man, such as the rake or basket. Something as simple as a circle takes on new meaning when combined with the other cards in the Gypsy Road

The Lines

Many people have questioned the simplicity of the card design used for the Gypsy Road deck, but the cards are kept as pure as possible for a reason. Even a single solid line brings hidden power with it; additional decoration on the cards would cloud the meaning of the focus symbol.

There are nine distinct line styles included in this deck.  In fact, the cards themselves are named after one of those line cards, the Gypsy Road, a pattern believed throughout time to act as a trap for evil energy and spirits.  The unending line captures evil, which is unable to find the path off the Gypsy Road.

The Colors

Most people are familiar with the important role color plays across both scientific and spiritual beliefs, a fact that is highlighted within the Gypsy Road deck, which contains 11 basic color cards. In addition to the traditional colors, the deck contains three specialized color combinations, each with its meaning clearly explained. The meaning for each color is explained in simple detail and many people will find that they are already familiar with what each color represents.
